A poem by an International poet who is not an American

Grand Market Night
by Monica Gunning

I'm part of the bustle
in the village square.
It's Christmas Eve again.
Grand Market Night is here.

I jingle my pennies
for sparklers and a treat.
I hope to find a trinket
when I buy my lucky box.

Drummers and fifers play.
People shop and laugh and dance.
We light our sparklers.
Hurrah for Grand Market Night!

Introduction
This is a great poem to talk about how different countries spend the holidays.

Extensions
Read the poem to the class, talk about the celebration they are having and explain that different countries celebrate Christmas in different ways. Ask the class where they think these people are from, ask if they notice what type of clothes they are wearing. Get a world map and have them point to Jamaica. Ask them to locate it on the map and  find the  longitude and latitide. Ask what body of water surrounds the island. You can ask other geography questions as well.
