Poetry Break 10

Lee Bennett Hopkins

Staring

out
the window
on the long ride
to
South Eighth Street School
on the
bursting
crowded
city bus

I wonder
if Daddy
ever--

even for a
little while--

thinks
about me--

thinks
about
us.

Introduction
I read this book of poems a while ago but it was only until recently that I found out they reflect on Lee Hopkins life.

Extension
I think this would be a great book to use as a biography with the whole class. You could discussion his life by reading the poems in the book. Call on different students to read from the book.  In this poem the  class could talk about how they would feel if this were them. Talk about feelings and how the boy must be feeling. You might want to talk about where his dad could be.
