The Whippoorwill
Calls
by Beverly McLoughland
No one hears her
Coming
Through the woods
At night
For she is like
A whippoorwill
Moving through the trees
On silent wings.
No one sees her
Hiding
In the woods
By day
For she is like
A whippoorwill
Blending into leaves
On the forest floor.
And one night
The whippoorwill calls
And the warm air
Carries the haunting sound
Across the fields
And into the small dark cabins.
And only the slaves know
It is Harriet.

Introduction
I think students will enjoy reading this poem about Harriet Tubman.
Expansion
I would use this poem and story for students in grade 4th -6th. Read the poem and see if the students
can guess who it's about. As you read have the students write down facts about her. Next read the book Harriet Tubman
by Bree Burns. It is the biography of the Afo-American women best known for her work with the underground railroad. Talk about
what happened to Harriet . Why were we so hateful..
