My Brother Is as Generous as Anyone Could Be
By Jack Prelutsky

( sing to the tune of the Itsy Bitsy Spider)

My brother is as generous
as anyone could be,
for everything he's ever had
he'd always shared with me.
He loaned me his binoculars,
his new computer games,
and his wind-up walking dragon
that breathes artificial flames.

I've been grateful for his robots,
for his giant teddy bear,
but not for certain other things
I'd hoped he'd never share-
though I'm glad he's shared his rockets
and his magic jumping rocks,
I wish my brother hadn't shared
his case of chicken pox.

Something Big Has Been Here. 1990. News York:  Greenwillow Books.

Introduction
Kids will enjoy hearing this poem about sharing. You can remind them that you should always share with people.

Extension

Read the poem to the class. Talk about how you can make some poems sound like song lyrics. Ask if anyone has heard of the Itsy Bitsy Spider. Write the words  to the Itsy Bitsy Spider on an overheard projector and have the class sing it.
Read the poem My Brother Is As Generous As Anyone Could Be .  If you  can find the song the Itsy Bitsy Spider on CD or cassette play it so the class  can hear it. When you finish ask the class to try and sing the new poem using the tune. Ask the class instead of getting chicken pox what else can you get from your brother?
