The following sites offer many activities for teachers using Shel Silverstein material.
HarperCollins Children's Books offers teachers a downloadable kit to be used with National Poetry Month in April.
The kit is based completely on Shel Silverstein's works and offers pictures of characters from many his poems to be used with
various activities such as: rhyming words, creative writing, learning about different themes, plus many more ideals.
This is available at:http://www.shelsilverstein.com
Many of Shel Silverstein poems have potential in the class room
such as:
- In the poem, Examination, where the doctor is pulling things
out of the throat, you can get old magazines and illustrate this happening.
- The poem, Channels, can be used as a group read aloud activity, you can add on to the
bottom of the poem to include the whole class. The same with the poem, Hard to Please.
- Have the class divide into groups; give each group a Shel Silverstein book. The class will
divide the poems into like subjects, poems about food, body parts, or names.
- Using different poems from Shel Silversteins's books, have students write down
adjectives, nouns and verbs to build a word wall for National Poetry Month. You can also add other authors' poems
to this activity.
- Find various poems that use descriptive language and write the words down.
- Find synonyms or antonyms in different poems.
